Students’ Grades Rise with Church Attendance

09/05/2008

Recent studies have shown that students’ grades can benefit from church attendance.

Based on a survey conducted by the University of Iowa and the University of Notre Dame, sociologists concluded that high school students who attend a weekly worship service had an average grade point average about 0.144 points higher than students who rarely attend or don’t attend at all.

Reasons for the grade boost include the following:

  • Regular contact with adults and role models
  • Parents more likely to communicate with friends’ parents
  • More likely to participate in extracurricular activities

Other studies have shown positive correlations between regularly attending worship and breathing healthfully, as well as between church attendance and life expectancy. Studies also show children who attend church are also expected to create fewer discipline problems with their parents.

The researchers analyzed survey results and data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.
