Priest Discourages Obama Voters from Taking Communion

Penace required for Catholic parishioners who voted for Obama

11/14/2008

A Catholic priest from South Carolina has told his parishioners that if they voted for Barack Obama, they should not take communion until they do penance – because of Obama’s support of abortion rights.

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenville called Obama the most radical pro-abortion candidate in the history of the presidency or the United States Senate. Though church law forbids the priest from refusing to serve people communion, he already sent a letter to his parishioners explaining his expectations.

Earlier this week, Roman Catholic bishops from across the country voted to confront the Obama administration on abortion issues.
