Auto CEOs Flew Private Jets to D.C. to Request Bailout Money

11/20/2008

When three American auto company CEOs flew to Washington, D.C., to request a $25 billion bailout, they did so via private jets, CNN reports. The irony of the situation did not sit well with lawmakers who scolded them for their spending while simultaneously asking for taxpayer money.

Alan Mulally of Ford, Robert Nardelli of Chrysler and Richard Wagoner of General Motors asked Congress Nov. 19 to approve a loan package to save the troubled American-car makers. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid subsequently put off a test vote on the matter because it became clear the measure was nowhere near gaining the 60 votes it needed.

The three companies each defended their travel arrangements pointing to their standard travel procedures, which — like many other large corporations have done — are put in place to ensure safety. None of the companies disclosed the cost of their flight.
