Progress on Global Warming Bill Pleases Evangelical Organization

12/07/2007

A climate bill that would fight global warming survived committee and will come to a vote in the U.S. Senate, much to the approval of members of the Evangelical Climate Initiative.

The Lieberman-Warner Bill -- which was spearheaded by Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, and Sen. John Warner, R-Va. -- would cap greenhouse gases at the 2005 level starting in 2012 and mandate a rollback to the 1990 level by 2005.

Such a restriction thoroughly pleases many devout Christians, among them, the Rev. Jim Ball, president of the Evangelical Environmental Network.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted Wednesday to send the bill to the floor, where it will be voted on sometime in the spring.

"We believe global warming is a moral problem," Ball said. "We see every step toward protecting God's creation to be a moral moment." Ball signed the ECI's Call to Action, a 2006 document that aims to change public policy and to encourage Christians to take a personal stand against global warming.
